The official Oscars Twitter account posts a leaked image from Birds of Prey online. While the latest DCEU film struggled at the box office, it did earn widely positive reviews from critics. Many found plenty to enjoy in Birds of Prey, ranging from fun character dynamics to exciting action. However, few would have predicted they’d leave the theater with a soft spot for Harley Quinn’s trademark breakfast sandwich - a fan-favorite aspect of the movie that viewers have been eager to make at home and try for themselves.

Harley’s breakfast sandwich is a sensation now, but during the Birds of Prey pre-release marketing campaign, audiences had no idea it was coming. The scene in question (when Harley orders the sandwich from Sal and admires it in all its glory before taking a bite) was absent from the Birds of Prey trailers and TV spots, saving her go-to meal as a surprise for the theater. In the weeks since, images from the sequence have circulated online, but they’re clearly leaks. Funnily enough, the Academy is such a big fan of Harley’s breakfast, even they couldn’t help but share an unofficial clip.

Today, the Academy’s official Twitter account posted a good morning message to followers, taking the opportunity to specifically extend the sentiment to “bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches out there.” Their tweet included a Birds of Prey GIF of Harley relishing her breakfast, which is leaked. Check it out in the space below:

There isn’t anything inherently wrong with the Academy referencing a recently-released film in a social media post, but it is amusing they opted to go for this image. While the above scene wasn’t featured in promotional materials, the Birds of Prey soundtrack trailer did include a shot of Harley munching on the signature sandwich as she winked at the camera. The Academy could have easily shared that bit and still got the main message of the tweet across. Studios typically don’t like it when leaked images and footage from their movies spread online, so it’s interesting to see the official Oscars account (not a DC fan page) take part in the practice. Obviously, there wasn’t any malicious intent here, but there were more official options on the table for the account to use.

With the Academy taking notice of Birds of Prey now, fans are jokingly speculating about the film’s award chances at next year’s Oscars ceremony. The past two years have seen comic book adaptations nominated for Best Picture (Black Panther and Joker), but it seems unlikely Birds of Prey will join those ranks. However, the movie could score nods on below-the-line categories, such as costume design (which earned high praise in several reviews). Of course, this humorous tweet isn’t a sign Birds of Prey will rack up some accolades, but that’s still fun to consider.
