A popular P.T. modder found a way to escape from the game’s looping hallway and explore a portion of the town beyond. Meant as a teaser for Silent Hills, P.T. was released on PS4 in 2014 for only a brief time before being removed from the network when Silent Hills was cancelled.

Ever since P.T.’s short-lived appearance on the PlayStation Network, the teaser has gained a cult following, part of which is devoted to finding secrets in the game. Modder Lance McDonald has made some of the biggest discoveries about hidden content in P.T., primarily through camera hacks. Earlier this year, McDonald unlocked P.T.’s camera to find that the game’s antagonist, Lisa, who gets her hands on the player at the end, is actually following close behind the entire time. Using a similar trick, McDonald later revealed that the player character model has the likeness of Norman Reedus throughout the whole demo, a fact that was originally obscured by restricted camera angles.

Lance McDonald’s latest P.T. hack may be the most impressive yet. After finding a way to access the demo’s outdoors map, McDonald discovered that Lisa would appear in a jumpscare any time the player went out of bounds and had to trick the game into thinking they were still on solid ground to prevent it. The result is that the player can walk around a small portion of P.T.’s town and see the surprising amount of detail put into an area that they were never meant to explore.

While there’s not much to see in P.T.’s newly discovered environment, it still sets the tone for what could have been an extremely creepy game. Co-directors Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro may not have gotten the chance to explore Silent Hills in its entirety, but recent rumors say that Kojima might get a shot at a new Silent Hill, so there still may be hope of a collaboration between the two.

For a short demo, P.T. seems to have an extraordinary amount of content that remains to be seen. It should come as no surprise that a project helmed by both Kojima and Del Toro would inspire a lot of fascination, but what is surprising is the lengths its fans are willing to go to uncover its secrets and the amount of content still hiding within it. It’s hard to imagine what else could be left to discover, but the modding community doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
