Wonder Woman’s fortunes changed, though, when she made a gallant entrance in 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Jenkins wants to keep the momentum rolling following the release of the character’s solo movie – which traces Wonder Woman’s roots back to the early 20th century on the sheltered island paradise of Themyscira. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Jenkins shares her ideas for a sequel:
“I’m excited for her to come to America and become the Wonder Woman we are all familiar with from having grown up around her as an American superhero. I’d like to bring her a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing. Wonder Woman 1 is so much about her becoming the person she is. I can’t wait to spring forward with who she is and have another great standalone superhero film.”
That’s not to say Jenkins regrets the Wonder Woman goes the origins route in the first film, since an origins story – which she says is something she’s wanted to do for 10 years – is necessary to get a full understanding of the character. Jenkins says:
Since the character is vital in the upcoming Justice League movies, Jenkins knows it may be quite a while before the opportunity to direct Wonder Woman 2. But, the Sun says, no longer how long another movie takes, it won’t prevent Jenkins from coming back to the franchise.
“I always thought the origin story would be the great way to go. I love origin superhero stories and I love the simplicity you can have with that journey. Also, there was the fact that no one had done her story and the fact that I love her. So it was a treasure trove of potential.”
With any luck, Warner Bros. won’t waste any time locking in a date for a Wonder Woman sequel and keeping Jenkins on board. She’s already attracted the attention of Dwayne Johnson for his Disney film Jungle Cruise, who says he’s a big fan of the helmer. With her DCEU experience, could The Rock be thinking of Jenkins to direct a Black Adam solo movie, too?
